BLACK LAW STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION OF CANADA

The Black Law Students’ Association of Canada (BLSA Canada) is a national, student-run non-profit organization founded in 1991. We are committed to supporting and enhancing academic and professional opportunities for hundreds of Black law students across the country,  in both official languages. This commitment extends to black high school and undergraduate students and the community generally through our mentorship initiatives and our charitable initiative, BLSACares.

Our Mandate

01.

BLSA Canada believes that mentorship is integral to the promotion of equality. We can all be mentors, helping those a step behind us, and we must all be mentees, learning from those ahead.

02.

Community

BLSA Canada seeks to create a sense of community and belonging for Black law students at our National Conference and Civil Law Symposium. BLSA Canada members also participate in community development and volunteer projects in various cities across Canada.

03.

Experience

We provide our members with opportunities for valuable, advocacy experience at our annual Julius Alexander Moot and Civil Law Negotiations Competition.

04.

Support

BLSA Canada exists to support Black law students towards a successful legal career. To that end our executive is always available talk –  BLSA Canada is committed to supporting you any way we can.

Husoni Raymond

Dear BLSA Canada network,

For over 32 years, BLSA Canada has been the premier voice for Black law students nationwide. We are a pillar of support, zealous advocates, and creators of opportunity for the next generation of Black lawyers. As a national non-profit run solely by full-time student volunteers, the calibre of our work demonstrates our commitment to the communities we serve.

I would like to thank the outgoing board, led by the 2022–2023 National President, Mirabelle Harris-Eze, for the passion and commitment they brought to the organization, ensuring that BLSA Canada’s 32nd year was a precedent-setting one. The vision for BLSA Canada spans decades. Our accomplishments today are due to the work of generations of Black law students who served on the board before us; the Black legal community is forever indebted to them.

The journey of a law student is never easy, and for those of us who belong to historically marginalized communities, the challenges can be even greater. But in the face of adversity, we have shown time and time again that we are capable of greatness. Our collective intelligence, resilience, and strength have been on full display, and I am proud to be a part of such a talented and dynamic community.

This year, we will focus on innovation and collaboration, dedicated advocacy and support, and growth for years to come. We look forward to expanding our current partnerships and creating new ones to better serve our membership. We will create training and resources to support our local chapters in their work, and we will embark on a strategic planning journey that will create concrete goals for BLSA Canada and our chapters across the country. With a clear strategic plan and vision, all chapters and members will be working towards common goals and objectives, further bolstering our impact nationwide.

Together, we can continue to push boundaries, break barriers, and do our part in creating an inclusive legal profession. I look forward to collaborating with you this year to make this vision a reality.

Sincerely,
Husoni Raymond

Husoni Raymond
