Black Law Students' Association of Canada

The Black Law Students’ Association of Canada (BLSA Canada) is a national student-run non-profit organization founded in 1991. We are committed to supporting and enhancing academic and professional opportunities for black law students in both official languages. This commitment extends to black high school and undergraduate students and the community generally through our mentorship initiatives and our charitable initiative, BLSACares.

Our Mandate

The BLSAC believes that mentorship is integral to the promotion of equality. We can all be mentors, helping those a step behind us, and we must all be mentees, learning from those ahead.

02.

Community

BLSA Canada seeks to create a sense of community and belonging for Black law students.

03.

Experience

We provide our members with an opportunity for valuable practical experience at our annual Julius Alexander Moot.

04.

Support

Ultimately, BLSA Canada exists fo support Black law students towards a successful legal career. To that end our executive is always available talk – the BLSA is committed to helping you any way it can.

President’s Message

Kerry-Anne Cornwall

Osgoode Hall Law School, Schulich School of Business
Class of 2023

First, we will strive to be leaders in advocacy for our students and in the community.

Dear BLSA Fam,

I’d like to take this time to introduce myself to you – my name is Kerry-Ann Cornwall (call me Kerry!) and I am in the second year of the JD/MBA program at Osgoode Hall Law School and Schulich School of Business. It is my honour and privilege to lead the BLSA Canada 2021-2022 National Executive as President.

Normally, we would have met one another by now at the BLSA Conference; the 1L’s would have seen what it is like to be a member of the national BLSA family, the upper years and articling students would have seen their friends from across the country, and we all would have danced the night away at the Gala. Though we are not able to meet in person this year, we are excited to see many of you and create new memories at our virtual BLSA Conference to be hosted in May.

As we close the book on the previous Executive term, I want to share with you the new Executive’s mission going forward. First, we will strive to be leaders in advocacy for our students and in the community. We must do this keeping in mind that we are diverse amongst ourselves and this diversity should be acknowledged and amplified. Interrelated to this, we wish to take formative steps to ensure that regionalism is better represented organizationally. Finally, we look to build strategic relationships to ensure long-term support for and viability of the organization. In all of this, we want to be responsive to the needs of our membership and ensure that we are in a position to offer support as needed to our BLSA Chapters and members. As we release the application package for the BLSA Canada Officer positions, I hope you will consider joining the National Executive team as we aim to meet our goals for this year.

We cannot thank the 2020-2021 BLSA Canada Executive enough for all of their hard work over the past year, especially as we navigated the pandemic. They have left us some very big shoes to fill, but I am looking forward to all we can accomplish this year.

Until then, I wish you all the best of luck as you finish your semesters or articling terms!

Take care,

Kerry
